New Music on MySpace
We've uploaded a new piece to the MySpace site ( http://www.myspace.com/architectsoftheatmosphere). It's part I of a new CD called Ionization. Check it out and let us know what you think. The biggest problem with these type of postings is you don't get the whole scope of the piece, which I think is important when you're talking about the sort of ambient, album oriented music we're creating. Mood is obviously most important to some of this stuff and while you can feel the mood the piece it just begins to set up where the CD actually goes. I guess that's good in a way, if you like what you hear you'd be more likely to buy the entire CD. It's just hard, our tracks are all so long, so we have to divide them up into sections and then put the sections on the web as tracks. It makes it difficult to express the scope of what we're doing. Either way, the new selection sounds great and we're really anxious to hear what everyone thinks about it, so check it out and drop us a line. | | Monday, February 6th, 2006 | | 10:55 pm |
New CD Complete?/Galileo's Moons/Remix
If all goes well, new music will be up on the MySpace site and hopefully Soundclick tomorrow night. I've just finished mastering and mixing the disc and if it plays well in some of the other players that I'll be testing it in then tomorrow it should be good to go. Obvioulsy, I'll be leaving bulletins and updating the blog once I know for sure. The CD is from a session Rick and I did in October of 2004. Like all of our other sessions it was totally improvised. I walked away thinking that we had absolutely nothing usable. Rick however, rolled up his sleeves, threw out a little elbow grease and before you knew it, a disc was born. This may be the most interesting in terms of the production of all our discs to date. Rick reversed tracks, added granular synth, threw in a few other secrets that we'll keep up our sleeve and the disc was born. At the time it seemed like it would be one that we kept in the vaults for some time to come because we really couldn't do anything with it live. Now though, with Rick in Virginia and me in Pennsylvania, that isn't a problem. So, it's free to be released. My original plan for the disc was to master it in Nuendo. However, since this was the first time I've used the program I found that it wasn't that quick for me to work in. I wanted to make a couple of quick edits and add some gentle EQ and compression, get rid of some of the unwanted frequencies, especially on the bottom end and make sure the level was consistent throughout. Because I was having a problem feeling my way around Nuendo (I've always been more of a Cakewalk user than Steinberg) I decided to dump everything into Sonar and go from there. Once I was finished I dumped it into Sound Forge to make sure the frequencies seemed to be consistent and that nothing was out of wack. That brings us back to where I started...I've burnt the disc and am going to play it tomorrow in a few different players and make sure everything sounds right. Then I'll upload sections I've already mapped out in Sound Forge as tracks for everyone to take a listen to and let us know what you think. I've decided to take a small break from Galileo's Moons. I wanted to finish Ionization (I think that's what Rick wanted to call it but that could change, consider it a working title), so it took a back seat for awhile. Now that it's complete I'm going to begin work on the remix for another MySpace band, Nude and then am going to concentrate on doing some solo tracks and working on some tracks from my other band, Central Electrique. I also want to begin getting all of the poetry I've compiled together for my book and get that all typed up and ready to be sent to various agents, publishers, on-line sites. Once all of that is complete, I'll start work on Galileo's Moons again. Keep checking back, because I'll update all of our various blogs as work begins again. | | Sunday, February 5th, 2006 | | 12:27 am |
AoA new/old CD
So, I found another CD that Rick and I did a little while ago. I'll be doing some final mastering of it over the next few days and then will be putting it up on MySpace and probably Soundclick as well (if the files aren't too big for that site.) Be sure to check it out because this is by far the furthest thing from anything we done in the past. Started out the same, recording live improvised performaces, but that's where it takes a turn. Rick decided to manipulate the tracks in the studio so he flipped some around, added granular synth work, etc, etc. This is truly space music and would be great for deep meditation. Be sure to check it out and let us know what you think. I'll be adding another post when it's finished so everyone can check it out. The plan is to wake up tomorrow, record the guide tracks for the Central Electrique track that Mark and I are working on, begin mastering the new/old CD and then if there's any time left before we have to head out to watch the game I'll continue work on Galileo's Moons. Then I have to upload the basic tracks we've received from a German act called Nude, to work on their remix. Over the next week I'll be working on that so Galileo's Moons is going to be even later than I had planned. I also have plans to begin work on a solo CD, set up another MySpace site for my solo work, work on the CD from the session I did with Blain and get AoA's music distributed as many places digitally as humanly possible. A lot of work but the end product will be worth it. Keep checking back for updates, information and release schedules. | | Monday, January 23rd, 2006 | | 10:58 pm |
ITunes-Oribiting Vertex/AoA
Submitted the electronic form yesterday for the label Orbiting Vertex to be available on ITunes. There's a whole approval process that happens behind the scenes and they tell you that due to the number of requests they're getting it could be awhile before a response happens. With any luck though, in the very near future you'll be able to purchase AoA's work on ITunes. I'm working on some promotional ideas too, like if you purchase "Signals From Cydonia" we'll give you a copy of "Stellar Evolution." I don't know it's in the planning process but we'll let you know when it happens. I'm also looking into finding out how to get the music up on other digital distrubtion sites as well. I imagine all of the sites have the same procedure, so it may take a little time but I think this year our music will be available to more people than ever would have been possible with traditional CD's. Of course then the quality of the music and the promotion put into place play an even larger part than ever before. I also worked on Galileo's Moon tonight. It's still coming together. At this point, it's close to 13 minutes. Sounds great, and like the ITunes thing, with any luck you'll be able to hear it soon. Keep checking back for more updates. | | Sunday, January 22nd, 2006 | | 11:37 pm |
Orbiting Vertex/Independent Artist/AoA
Talked with Rick yesterday about the Orbiting Vertex label. I'm going to do a strictly digital label. It just makes more sense with the present business conditions that exist in the music business. In this day and age there is almost no point in paying to manufacture and duplicate CDs, especially for the independent artist who may or may not move all of the CDs that we've paid to duplicate. I'm planning to release the new AoA album, Rick's solo album, my solo album, my performance art project and possibly some Digital Buddha remixes of the AoA/Cyberia work. It's going to be an exciting time these next few months and probably into the new year, so make sure you keep checking here for progress reports, the Architect of the Atmosphere My Space page and our MSN Space for updates on the work. Kim finished the label's logo. It's up on in the pictures section of the MSN Space site, check it out because it looks great. The address is http://spaces.msn.com/members/Architectoftheatmo/. Make sure you let us know what you're thinking because I think it's amazing. I've been thinking a lot lately about what it means to be an artist. I've spent most of my adult life working to be considered an artist and now I'm not sure that anyone knows. In college everyone knew that's what I was. I think other than my family now and the people who are interested in the music on the web, most people that see me don't know that I'm an artist. That bothers me. It's something I need to change. I don't want my son to think of me as a salesman who also creates music. Time slowly slips away and will rob you of so many things, your dreams, your identity, your goals if you let it. It's important to make a conscious decision to not let that happen. In the AoA world, work continues on the new CD. It's up to about 12 minutes now and sounds really great. Very cinematic in scope. The sequenced line worked great. I've got it to a point where I can see some lead lines that are going to need added, nothing much, just a line here or there to add that little something. The work is definitely coming quicker though, so it shouldn't take too much more time. Make sure you keep checking back. | | Sunday, January 15th, 2006 | | 10:09 pm |
More Work-AoA
Well, I worked pretty hard this weekend on the new AoA piece. Of course, that was between seeing family and playing with the baby and washing clothes and rehearsing Central Electrique, etc, etc. The piece is now around 10:45 and I've sent what I have so far off to Rick to get his reaction. It's different from previous AoA pieces because it has drums courtsey of Rebirth and a sequenced line from the Korg MKII. Plus, the fact that we recorded a half hour and I've used that to chop and rearrange and coax this new piece. I'm hoping since I really made a lot of progress this weekend that it won't take too much longer . Kim finished the logo for Orbiting Vertex and I talked with my brother Dan about getting getting up a server for the label. Everything is falling into place, now it's just about getting this piece done, promoting it right and pushing everything along. Keep checking back for more updates. | | 10:06 pm |
Rehearsal-Central Electrique
Rehearsed Central Electrique this weekend, actually writing is what we did to be more precise. We're going to start recording the songs we have in two weeks. Next week we're going to get together and rehearse the songs the whole through and make final adjustments. I still have to do a few things for the third piece, but they're pretty much ready to go. After we have these done we're going to press everything to a CD and then start playing out again, probably anyway, we'll have to see it's rough with a baby! Keep checking back for more entries regarding all of the current projects! | | Thursday, January 12th, 2006 | | 10:45 pm |
AoA-New Photo's/Galileo's Work
Added new photos both on the MSN site and on the MySpace site. Kim did great work on the logo and cover design. It was necessary to do the new cover because we changed the name from Cyberia, so all the artwork had to be altered. While Kim was doing that she decided to work on an entirely new feel for the logo. I think it looks fabulous! Worked on Galileo's Moons tonight. Got about another 45 seconds done. I know that doesn't sound like much, but with the painstaking work I'm doing plus the fact that there's a little baby running around the house that needs attention it is. All I can tell you is that all the time spent working on it will be worth it in the end. I still hope to have it finished in the next couple of weeks, at least the cobbling together of the tracks. Once that's finished I can begin EQ'ing, panning, etc. Keep checking back for more information about when it's going to be released and check the MySpace site and Soundclick to hear the music we've already recorded! | | Wednesday, January 11th, 2006 | | 11:08 pm |
AoA-Finished My Space
Finished adding songs to the My Space site. There are 4 songs that should be active by tomorrow, what would be the entire second side of Signals From Cydonia if this were the '70's, since it isn't it's the last 4 songs of the CD. They sound really good, even better than on Soundclick because of the ability to have larger files. Tomorrow I'll be working on Galileo's Moons again. As I think I've said before, with a baby and a normal job and just life in general, I have to pick to do one thing each day. Either I work on the promotion of the band or the new CD. It's rare that I get enough time to work on both. Plans are still in the works for the official web site and the record label. Kim will be working on a log for AoA and a new cover with the new name for Signals From Cydonia. Well, I guess that's it for tonight. Update everyone tomorrow! | | 12:15 am |
MySpace-AoA
Yesterday I started a page on My Space for Architects of the Atmosphere. I've barely done anything with the page yet, no bio, no information, just uploaded one section from the second "album side" from Signals From Cydonia. Came home today to a surprise, someone heard the MP3 and is interested in using some of our music for a film they're working on. As you can imagine, we're quite excited and happy about the response already. It's things like this that shows me more and more that continue to follow the correct path with the music. It has a definite soundtrack quality, ethereal, much more interested in atmosphere than melody, not to say that we don't include melody because we do. Over the next few days we'll be uploading more music to the site. If you're interested in checking it out it's at http://www.myspace.com/architectsoftheatmosphere. As usual, keep checking back here for more information about what we're doing and progress reports on the new album. | | Monday, January 9th, 2006 | | 10:03 pm |
More work
So, I worked on the new Architects of the Atmosphere piece today. It's now around 7 minutes long, that's without the intro, so we're well into the body of it now. I still think that once it's finished it may need some connecting lead lines and themes, but that will sort itself out after the body has been completed. Added a sequenced line and am now adding sections that Rick and I played live on top of it. I'm hoping to have it completed in the next week or two, it's just slow going because of the process I'm using. The important thing is that there is forward movement and I'm not getting bogged down. Keep checking back, because when it's finished I'll be letting you know where to go to check it out. | | Sunday, January 8th, 2006 | | 11:06 pm |
Back From NC
Well, I'm back from North Carolina. After taking the last couple of days to decompress I'm ready to finish up the new Architects of the Atmosphere CD. That shouldn't take too long but because of wanting to spend time with my family, work, etc. it could take a couple of weeks. There will be a lot of promotion for it as soon as it's complete and I'll be getting the music out on ITunes and Soundclick and every music site I can. When it's finished I'll start working on the solo album and the poetry book as well. Keep checking back, it's going to be a busy few months! | | Saturday, December 31st, 2005 | | 5:25 pm |
Soundclick UP
Well the Soundclick site is up and at this point is featuring music from Stellar Evolution. At some point soon we'll be featuring the music of Signal From Cydonia, although I don't think that will be from a free download, but you'll be able to purchase the album. The link for the music is http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=459486. I'll be traveling next week so expect few to no posts until I get back. When I get back though look for a lot of activity! | | Thursday, December 29th, 2005 | | 7:35 pm |

Cyberia/Nameless Generation/Tired Scenes.../Solo Project...
Since things are beginning to move at break neck speed for me and several different projects are going on all at once I thought that I would make it easy to keep everyone that was interested updated. From now on I'll be using this journal to post entries about all of my projects. The subject will have listed the project. That way you'll be able to read about the project or not. I was going to start several different journals but it all became far too tedious and confusing. There will be several different projects. At this point here they are: 1.) Cyberia-general comments and going on's with the band. 2.) Galileo's Moons-Comments about the production and progress with the new Cyberia album. 3.) Orbiting Vertex-Anything about the record company I'll be working on. 4.) Nameless Generation-Solo spoken word project. 5.) Tired Scenes From a City Window-Poetry collection 6.) Solo Project-At this point the nameless solo project I'll be working on 7.) Central Electrique-My project with Mark 8.) My still unnamed project will Blain. That's it for now. A lot of projects and a lot to keep straight! | | Sunday, December 25th, 2005 | | 10:29 pm |
Christmas
So it's Christmas. The family events have come and gone. It was the baby's first Christmas, which as you can imagine, was a big deal. Everyone in the family bought him things so he has way too much stuff now! He's definitely going to be a spoiled child! With the coming of the new year comes many exciting projects. First and foremost will be the completion of the new Cyberia album. After we've finished that then I'll be moving onto the spoken word album I have planned and working on the poetry book, which I think is finished except for typing it up. This year promises to be a big year. I plan on the doing a lot of readings, if I can find acceptable places this year. My plan is to put together a digital video show to go with the reading. The album will be filled with rage, sort of reaction to everything going on in the world right now, the war, terrorism, high oil prices, the fact that my kid is going to inherit more debt than I did, the same cycle I was left with only much, much worse. I played a bit of the Cyberia album for Greg yesterday who thought it sounded really good, like soundtrack work, which is exactly what it's supposed to be. I'm trying to figure out if there's a way for me to play any of this stuff, or my own solo stuff out. I'll be working on that in the new year as well, along with recording with Central Electrique. Well that's it for now. Keep checking back for more updates. | | Tuesday, December 20th, 2005 | | 10:20 pm |
Tech Info/Work/Etc
So, I've been working on the new piece I told you about last time. It's really starting to take form. Originally I had hoped to have it finished by Christmas but I'm thinking now that it will be the second or third week in January. It's a lot of work because I'm listening to snatches of the recordings that Rick and I have done and trying to figure out where and how they'll fit together. Plus, I'm writing on soft synths and on the Electribe and thinking of lead lines to play on the synths. I told you that I would give you some more technical information. I'm going to stay away from this point on the plug in's/soft synths, etc that I'm using in Sonar because I'm not sure those will stay in the final product. At this point I'm using many different plug in's mostly delays, echoes, reverbs and EQ's. For the actual recording Rick was using his Roland GR1, he was using his Zoom pedal and I think his Boss effects unit and a whole bunch of pedals. I was using the MicroKorg, Alesis Micron, Korg Electribe MKII. We fooled around for awhile with Rebirth live but eventually decided against it. We recorded everything to my Korg CR-4 four track, which I then dumped to the computer. You may be asking yourself why we used a four track. The reason is simple, previously we used the computer to record direct into. That only gave us two tracks of audio though and we wanted the ability to edit more, which is why we chose to use the four track. I would have never been able to do the editing I'm doing now if it wasn't for the four track. Everything was dumped down to Sonar 3. I'll add more details about the computer set up and plug ins as we move on with the project. So that's it for tonight. | | Saturday, December 17th, 2005 | | 11:20 pm |
Galileo's Moons
Editing has begun on the new Cyberia piece, "Galileo's Moons". The intro is done and the first section is just about finished. The basic tracks were all doen in Virginia during Thanksgiving week. I've added some percusion tracks so far from Rebirth and I'm adding some soft synths and eventually some other lead lines from the Microkorg and Micron. At this point I'm ready to add some sequencer lines from the Electribe, very Moog like, but with a more modern twist than say Tangerine Dream synth lines. It turns out that things like the Electribe are easier to write after the fact than trying to manipulate it live, since there are only so many pieces of it that can be altered live. For instance, there is no way to change pitch as the patterns play. This will be the first release for Orbiting Vertex records. In case you're wondering, I've already got plans for the second release so stay tuned. If you're interested, the next entry will have a lot more technical information about the original sessions and the work that's been done since, so if you're a tech head you may find this interesting. | | Monday, December 5th, 2005 | | 11:59 pm |
New Recording
Well, it's finally happened. During the Thanksgiving holiday we loaded up the family and went down to Virginia. While there we recorded what will hopefully be the next Cyberia release, this one with a much wider distribution and promotion plan. We recorded several hours of tape however the thing that made the first few Cyberia recording so tight was the fact that we would spend every weekend recording for several hours. We didn't have that luxury this time and I think that Rick and I both felt the pressure. We changed the way we recorded this time as well. Believe it or not, I bought an old fashion four track so that most of the instruments could have their own tracks. It's given me the option to do something I've wanted to do for a long time, add, take away, built over what we have done. I've begun piecing together my take on the tracks. It's slow work, much the way Boards of Canada or Download record where you're taking seperate pieces of the different track, keeping the feel of the original but changing what the flow was in the beginning. For instance on this one I'll probably be using Rebirth drums eventually. Having the ability to use Rewire means I can manipulate the drums live, adding another improvised aspect to the pieces in the studio. Plus I'll be adding sequences from the Electribe. Over the next several weeks the piece will probably mutate from the half hour session that I'm using as a basis to at least 45-50 minutes, if not longer. There's a lot of texture here, space is just oozing from the tracks. The only thing that I think we didn't record enough of was some lead lines over the texture so I'll probably be adding some of those. Not to many though, the idea is to let the ambience lead the way. Of course, Rick will be editing together his own interpetations as well from these sessions so the chances are there will probably be two completely different albums coming out of these sessions, who knows, maybe one day they can be released as a special double album, maybe dual format. Something to line our pockets when we're old and grey. I'll keep you updated on the progress, keep checking back. | | Friday, August 26th, 2005 | | 2:03 pm |
Cyberia Recording in Virginia
Dave is expected to arrive late tonight. The plan is to record some Cyberia tracks. He is only staying the weekend so I'm not sure how much we can get done. But I know we are both looking forward to jamming. If your interested in more blogging action from yours truly; I've set up a SPACE on msn.com Check it out. There are photos, and stories of me recording music, and writing some science fiction as well as the goings on in a truly crazy household that is my family. The SPACE is titled "Digital Thoughts". Check it out! Current Mood: cheerful |
